Floor Maintenance: Recoating Quartz Tiles with Polyurethane

quartz tiles

Quartz tiles are a resilient flooring material on their own, but they can last even longer with a coating of commercial-grade polyurethane. Other flooring materials, such as LVT, SPC, and sheet vinyl, can also last longer with a polyurethane coating. No matter what flooring it’s applied to, the polyurethane coating will wear down with time and continual foot traffic, requiring it to be recoated periodically. By using the right products and following the correct process, you can ensure your quartz tile and other floors have long-lasting protection and stay in good condition.

Recoating your floors at appropriate intervals can extend the life of your Rikett quartz tiles. Here is a brief overview of the process.

Preparing the Surface

Proper surface preparation is key to a successful recoating job. Start by cleaning the floor thoroughly to remove all dirt, dust, and grime. Use a neutral-pH cleaner for general cleaning, and for stubborn or heavily soiled areas, opt for an alkaline cleaner. Depending on the size of the area, you can use a mop and bucket or a rotary machine to do the job efficiently.

Next, scuff the floor lightly to help the new coating adhere to the existing polyurethane layer. A rotary machine fitted with an abrasive pad will work perfectly. After scuffing, vacuum and tack the floor to eliminate any remaining dust or debris.

Finally, ensure the floor is completely dry. Any moisture left behind can interfere with the coating’s adhesion and finish.

Apply the Coating

Once your floor is clean and dry, you’re ready to apply the polyurethane coating. Use a microfiber applicator pad to apply two to three thin coats, allowing each layer to dry for 30 minutes before applying the next. Be sure not to overload the applicator pad or let the product pool—this will help maintain a smooth, even finish. After the final coat, allow at least 30 minutes before allowing foot traffic back on the floor.

Long-Term Benefits for All Floors

Commercial-grade polyurethane coatings are designed for durability and longevity. The finish doesn’t easily wear off, and when it does begin to show signs of age, it’s easy to apply additional coats without the need for stripping, saving time and money in the long run.

With the proper preparation and product, recoating your quartz tile floor is a quick, effective way to maintain its beauty and extend its life.
