Protect Your Dormitory Flooring This Semester

dormitory flooring

The new semester is underway, and student housing is full of students once again. Although we’re happy to have students back on campus, protecting dormitory flooring from the wear and tear of its inhabitants. Keeping up with cleaning and maintenance can be a challenge, but choosing the right flooring material makes a huge difference. Quartz tile is the durable and resilient flooring material you need to stand up to whatever your students can throw at it.

Quartz tiles are a durable material for dormitory flooring, but they still need maintenance. Here’s how to protect the student housing floors this semester.

Basic Cleaning Habits

Convincing students to cultivate basic cleaning habits isn’t always easy, but regular room checks and residence expectations encourage them to at least do the bare minimum. Sweeping dirt and debris off the floor prevents scratches to the surface. Occasionally mopping with neutral cleaners—or even just water—also helps to maintain the floor. Quartz is non-porous and difficult to stain, but immediately wiping up spills ensures the surface of the floor remains clean.

Preventative Measures

While it is difficult to control how well students care for their individual rooms, there are preventative measures you can take throughout the building to maintain the floors. Placing mats at the entryways and in the halls helps collect dirt and grit from the outside so it doesn’t get tracked everywhere.

Despite their hardness, quartz floors can still be scratched by furniture. To protect the floors, put feet or sliders on any furniture provided to the students. Students often bring additional furniture items with them, so it may be worth the small expense to provide them with furniture feet.

Routine Maintenance

No matter how much you do to encourage students to keep their floors—and their rooms—clean and intact, there will likely be some minor damage. To stay ahead of any serious issues, inspect the student housing at least once during the semester to check for damage or wear.

To further reinforce the floors, you can also apply RikettSeal™. This enhanced, commercial-grade, UV-cured polyurethane coating provides an added layer of protection that is easy to clean and does not require waxing.’
